About the Equality Club
About the Equality Club
Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) has been working to set up Equality Clubs in schools across India to sensitize students about the different types of inequalities that exist in society. The aim is to raise consciousness, help build empathy and appreciation of one’s own privilege, and inspire students to take action.
The clubs adopt an experiential learning approach to help students explore challenging societal problems, break stereotypes and equip them with the skills necessary to take on leadership to re-write societal norms. With an intricately designed toolkit, full of activities and resources for a facilitator to use, we hope that the Equality Clubs will become India’s catalysts for change – a place where thought-provoking debates and discussions trigger ideas to #SmashInequality that exists around us.

This is my first year attending these sessions and it has been a great experience! The clubs focus on teaching us about social leadership that helps build empathy and appreciation for our own privilege. All the teachers who conduct the sessions make them very interactive. The biggest eye opener for me were the newspaper articles and interviews we watched in class about all the different inequalities happening around the world. I learned a lot from participating in Equality Clubs.

Equality clubs have complemented our curriculum in such a wonderful way. The resources have enabled so many meaningful conversations. It aligns with the school’s commitment to equip students with the skills and knowledge to serve as successful leaders and effect positive change in the world.

Equality Clubs align with Bewajahs' goal of creating an egalitarian society with young people at the centre of change and decision-making. We are connected by our common approach of taking young people on a journey from self to society through awareness, empathy and active citizenship. Inspiring young people in a movement to end discrimination by launching and facilitating EC across schools is an important pursuit of Bewajah. We want communities to be equipped to question and influence the narratives and social constructs supporting inequalities.

People For Change focuses on supporting marginalised communities. Our work majorly engages young people and adolescents through experiential learning to give them critical life skills. Hence there has been a deep connection between our organisation's work and the Equality Clubs. Working with young people and other communities has given me immense clarity and a deep sense of understanding towards human beings. These thoughts and understandings helped me a lot to collaborate with Equality Clubs. The club’s values and goals are helping us create impact through imparting learnings on social equality.

Our organisation believes in the model of the 5th space. This is a non-judgmental space where everyone and every opinion is welcome. We talk and practice equality within our workplaces and personal lives. Several of our youth have inherited prejudices and harmful stereotypes from society and begin to believe in them. I feel that such a program will initiate discussions around these beliefs and also create a space for students to share their opinions and thoughts. This is the goal around which Had-Anhad and Equality Clubs' values align.
